He left the UK in 1966 to take up the post of Chief Engineer at the Ministry of Works in Antigua and returned to Trinidad and Tobago in 1968 to take up a position with Sanders and Foster. When Sanders and Foster pulled out of Trinidad in 1972, he seized the opportunity and started his own company. That company, Yorke Structures Limited, is today the premier steel fabricating company is the Caribbean. When asked to articulate the vision that Bob Yorke had for the new company, a quarter of a century later, he is clear in his original beliefs. These remain as strong today. A strong believer in the power of positive thinking he will say that he knew that he could not fail at the new business because he believed that he was better than his rivals. He could clearly see his goals right from the beginning and knew that with the vision clearly in place, if he was prepared to make sacrifices to achieve those goals then nothing was impossible. Robert T. Yorke received his engineering education in England. After graduating, he worked for several prestigious British engineering consultancies including Mott Hay and Anderson (now Mott MacDonald) and Andrews, Kent and Stone, where he carried out his training before qualifying as a Chartered Structural Engineer.
