Yorke Structures Limited, however, realises that it has to operate in a competitive commercial environment. Consequently the company is committed to the process of continual development to improve the strengths of the organisation through the training of its employees to improve their skills and through increased efficiency initiatives aimed at eliminating waste and increasing customer satisfaction. This is being carried out through the application of an effective ISO 9002 Quality System. The company operates a modern fabricating plant in Arima, situated on approximately 13 acres of land. The main fabrication workshop alone occupies in excess of 200,000 square feet. The capacity of the works is approximately 12,000 tons per annum. Typically at any given time, raw materials in excess of 2,000 tons are carried in stock, allowing the company to remain flexible to customer requirements and offer quicker delivery times than other companies. The main workshop is equipped with nine overhead cranes, each with a five-ton capacity. Mobile cranes are available also where required to handle very large structural components. Almost all welding is carried out using automatic MIG welding machines and an automatic blasting plant is used for surface preparation of steelwork prior to painting.
The workshop is supported by a fully computerised integrated engineering design and drafting department together with other ancillary support services. The company, for example, operates its own transport fleet, has its own maintenance division, has an on-site restaurant, canteen and other catering facilities, organises its own security services and has an ambulance and first aid facilities. In addition to the fabrication of structural steelwork, the company offers other related structural components and products. It has two cold forming plants which produce profiled roof sheets and metal floor decking, it operates a plant which rolls and punches "Z" purlins and it owns a subsidiary company which manufactures fasteners. Yorke Structures Limited is ever mindful of its corporate responsibility to encourage excellence among the youth of Trinidad and Tobago. Since 1972, the Company has sponsored two prizes at the Annual Prize Awards Ceremony of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of the West Indies. The 1998 Prize Awards Ceremony for the academic year 1997/98 was held on September 16 at the Learning Resource Centre at the University's St. Augustine Campus. This year, Mr. Kerrin Burgess was the worthy recipient of the Yorke Structures Prize for the Best Student in Year 2 Civil Engineering. The Yorke Structures Prize for the Most Outstanding Year 2 Student in the Faculty of Engineering went to Mr. Sheldon Rawlins. Yorke Structures Limited also has a programme to provide sponsorship to selected students, has participated in exchange programmes with other organisations and provides regular experience to students in the Engineering Department. After 25 years in the business, Yorke Structures Limited has successfully completed an impressive array of projects throughout the Caribbean. When visitors from overseas wish to access the capabilities of the company, it has become a common practice to escort them on a tour of the Point Lisas Industrial Estate in central Trinidad. The estate is impressive in its own right and is something of which the nation can be justifiably proud. Yorke Structures Limited's involvement is even more impressive as it has participated actively in this development by supplying and erecting the majority of the structures on the site including three methanol plants. Yorke Structures Limited has become a household name in Trinidad and Tobago where its work has become an indelible part of the economic foundation of the country. Throughout the other islands, Yorke Structures Limited has been involved with many prestigious projects and has attained a reputation for its work which is unsurpassed. Its erectors have demonstrated enviable skills as structures have risen throughout the region.
